Calgary & Hotels

This little category of pictures shows both the city, as well as some hotels where we visited.

Calgary, sometimes called a "cow town", apparently for it's proximity to ranches, is, as you see, a real city of one million people. It would  be a very nice place to live; and it's weather is fairly moderate, as compared to our Upper Midwest conditions. And the distant views, as you will see in other pictures on this site, are remarkable.

This shot is from the airport, quite close to both the city and the farm region. Note hay bales in the foreground, and the last of the plane-property to the right edge of the picture.

This was shot from the airplane, from a middle seat, "blindly". I had no idea what the shot would produce.

Similarly, another shot as we took off. You see faintly (on a cloudy day) the mountains in the distance; and mostly a residential part of Calgary.

In Banff, Roger took Theresa's picture at at the Fairmont Hotel grand staircase (there were several). We had brunch there, but stayed elsewhere. Rooms start at $400.00 per night. But the Old English architecture and the mountains are all worth stopping to see.  (Also, she loves flowers, and these were lovely.)

At brunch while at this hotel, they gave us a window table, and this was our view. Even though overcast and snowing very lightly, it was beautiful.

Driving away from this same hotel, our view out front.

Here is the actual hotel in Banff where we stayed overnight. It was a one hundred year old, renovated, and very nice place.

In Jasper, we stayed here. It said it was run by North American Indians, but we saw no one who was of that heritage. It was probably Theresa's  personal favorite (although every place we went, accommodations and people were great). I bet those flowers are frozen by now.

This is our Lake Louise Inn, about 4 miles from the "real" Lake Louise hotel. We got king beds, with high speed Internet in room each night. And views... indescribable. This hotel has been there since the 60's, but was just renovated and they did a very special job. I think our drapes and bedspread were silk... a surprise, given the overall casual atmosphere.  (That atmosphere everywhere was very nice.) The car pictured was our rental Ford Explorer. It had a "Never Lost" global positioning system; but of course Roger had to bring our portable one too! Men and their toys :).
