Vegas & California

I was invited this year to judge a barbershop singing contest in Las Vegas on March 20 & 21. Since I was already west, I flew on out to Mike & Mary's and spent a week & a half with them. Below are pictures and journal of my activities.

Friday, March 20th

Cam drove me to the airport. Ran into an accident on 494 at Penn - a truck dumped a load of hay on the freeway. Anyway, I got to the airport in time for a smooth flight. Last evening we judged 27 quartets and then reviewed each performance with them for the lowest scoring 11. Didn't get to bed till 12:45 AM. Ugh! That's late for me.

Saturday, March 21st

Slept in this morning since I was up so late - got up at 6:30

Link to hotel/contest site: http://alexispark.com/

Hotel & ballroom (contest site) is a non-gaming hotel/resort - quite nice

Weather is perfect - high about 72

Contest work kept me up till 1:15 AM - very late for me

Sunday, March 22nd

Slept in till 7 this morning

No contest duties today - just pack up

Waited at Vegas airport for several hours

Then flight was announced as late by 2 hours

Boarded flight afterwhich announced another 1 hour delay while they "reversed" the airport

Finally arrived SJC at 8 PM

Monday, March 23rd

Back to my usual routine: up at 6

Spent the day at M&M's office

Worked on some personal computer stuff

And helped Mike with some computer setup stuff

Lunch at Panera, delicious supper made by Mary

Complete with Rice Pudding (yummmm, yummmm....)

Tuesday, March 24th

Up at 6 - weather in Plymouth, MN, is 10 degrees warmer than Fremont, CA: 52 in MN vs 41 in CA. Ugh. Always in the wrong place at the wrong time
Quiet day at their office. Drove over to Santa Clara where Mike picked up a laptop that needed setup while I took a nap. Nice.
Late afternoon we drove to Chris & Lara's in Dublin where we spent several hours with their boys at athletic events
First we took Tristin, their, 3 year old to soccer practice
Then we watched Holden's, a 6 year old, baseball practice
Lastly, we watched Julian's, a 8 year old, baseball practice
Took several pictures - see below
Then Chris & Lara served a wonderful supper for all of us
Then we came home where Mary had earlier made rice pudding - yum, yum

Wednesday

Up at 6 again - looks like Minnesota dodged a major snowfall - based on radar map I saw last evening with snow covering both Dakotas
Mike & I drove over to Sun - Santa Clara where he fixed a user's Apple

Weather today is perfect: 69 degrees

Mike & I did some "field work" when we got home in order to test the wetness of the "field." He "plowed" the field and ground up some twigs, branches, & leaves (see pictures below)

For supper, Mary fixed seasoned turkey shepherd pie made with home grown vegetable topped off with rice pudding - more yum, yum, ...

Then after the sun set, we watched Roy Orbison videos & old family photos

Thursday

Up at 6 again - warmer this morning: 52 degrees

This morning Mike & I drove over to Sun - Menlo Park - to deliver some computers

Closed the office at lunchtime

Chris brought Tristin & Holden over for the afternoon (standard Thursday ritual)

Did some more "field" work in the garden with the little boys

Drove the boys home

Drove to M&Ms South Lake Tahoe (SLT) home which is lovely (but cold)

Finally got to bed around midnight

Friday

Slept in till 7. Temp at SLT is only 26. Will put up new pictures later.

Today was the day. I went skiing! At Heavenly Valley.

Yes, you probably won't believe it. But look below and you'll see pictures of me skiing. And additionally, I have 4 witnesses: Mike, Mary, Chris, Michael

We rented the equipment this morning. Michael lent me clothes and I remembered all my old skills - it is just like riding a bike.

It was really fun. But I must admit I was rather out of control. Proudly, I can say I didn't fall once. Close. But no fall.

Temperature was wonderful - about 50 degrees on the slopes.

This evening we had an excellent dinner at Harrah's in South Lake Tahoe.

Chris drove back home this evening.

Mike & Mary stayed late at the casino while Michael & I came home and were in bed by 9.

Saturday

Up early at 6:30. Cool out - 27 degrees

This morning we took the gondola to the top of the mountain with breathtaking panoramas

Then we drove to Reno staying n the Silver Legacy Casino Resort - had a beautiful room

Mike, Michael, & I went on a town stroll visiting the U.S. Bowling Congress, with 78 lanes - huge facility

In the evening we saw Keith Robinson & Wanda Sykes, comedians

Sunday

Up at 7.

On a sad note, I must mention that today (March 29th) is the 2nd anniversary of Theresa's death. God rest her soul. Received several very nice messages from kids & Margaret re Theresa - thanks, all.

Leisurely trip from Reno back to Tahoe home.

Stopped on the way back for a little walk at Zephyr Cove near where Marg stayed when she & Ron were out here.

Had a delicious dinner at Harrah's - South Lake Tahoe.

Monday

Up at 6:30. Temp: 23.

Leisure morning. Left Lake Tahoe area for bay area at about 11.

In route, we drove through California's central valley where we saw lots of agriculture - interesting.

Dropped Michael at Chris' to pick up his car.

Then Mike & I did "chores" - plowed the garden, removed deck boards, & cleaned the pool.

Mary fixed a delicious supper of deviled eggs, salad, speghetti, & rice pudding.

Tuesday

up at 6.

Mike installed a new 320GB HDD on my laptop and cleaned it up from my water emergency of a year ago.

Weather is perfect. High 73.

In the evening, Mary's brother, Gene, who also lives in the bay area came by for a visit. He needed Mike's help getting rid of a virus on his computer. He & I had a nice chat remembering our days at Control Data where he also worked.

Wednesday

up at 6. Temp: 52.

spent the morning working on the society scoring program, updating master data and fixing reported problems.

after lunch, Mike, Michael, & I visited the Computer History Museum which use to be located in Boston. Many years ago, Theresa & I visited it as the Boston Computer Club Museum.

then in the evening, Chris & Lara and boys come over for dinner and Gene came over to pick up his computer. So Mary made a delicious supper for lots of people.

Thursday

up at 6. Temp 48. Cooler today

Flight out of San Jose airport at noon. Should be home by 6.

Arrive at MSP 1/2 hour early. Smooth flight.

Since my last visit, Mike & Mary rebuilt/repainted the gazebo in their back yard. In the process they added a special top to their cupola. The pictures below bring it into focus. To understand what it is and it's significance, contact David.

Look familiar?

What is that?
