Mackinac Island/Soo Locks

Beginning on June 27, 2003, we began a trip to Montreal and beyond. The first day was driving across Wisconsin to the  upper peninsula of Michigan.

This was the view of Lake Michigan from our hotel window just inside the "UP". Maybe the best picture.

Here we see the famous and magnificent Mackinac Bridge, almost 5 miles long, which was built about 45-50 years ago, and separates the UP from Lower Michigan, and on one side is Lake Michigan; the other, Lake Huron.

This is Roger strolling around the tourist area of Mackinaw City...lovely group of stores, restaurants, etc. All Victorian style.

Here are the horse drawn carriage tours of Mackinac Island. This is also left old and Victorian but much more so...no autos except emergency vehicles. That's Seymore on the left, and his partner Moe.  Tour lasted an hour and a half, plus time where we got off at the Fort.  They took us all around the town and into the forested state park.

After we toured the Fort then we got on this 3 horse team cart, which pulled more people.

Here is Theresa at the Fort, which overlooks the harbor. Quaint and pretty as a picture.

A nice man suggested that he take both our pictures, so here it is. Roger is wearing his prize hat, purchased on the mainland.

We visited the horse barn for the famous hotel on the Island. Here they were hitching up a team to pull a taxi which was going to pick up guests from the ferry. The workers here were very friendly. Said they had just purchased some new horses from Maple Plain, MN .

This is Roger on the main street.

Here he is eating his coveted home made fudge.

The bridge again, as seen from the ferry.
