Day 8: Monday, February 7, 2005

Our daily journal is after the pictures.

One example of several Folkloric dancers. These ladies were wearing lighted candles in glasses  on their heads. I guess we "cut" them off...

Roger at the bus stop when this very cute shuttle bus to Xcaret came by. They all looked similar but had different comical "baggage" on top. Even their wheel covers had advertising; and they had a little balcony hanging off the back.

At the Cancun airport.  UGH.  waiting, waiting, waiting. We got searched -even the purse - shoes, etc., both ways. No one cared about the artificial knee, which we were told would be a problem. We carry a card from the doctor for that.  There was one congenial Mexican attendant there who spoke perfect English... raised in Chicago, winters in Cancun, is a carpenter in Chicago in summer!

A man came by with these parrots & took our picture. These birds are very unafraid of people.

Daily Journal

Good to be home! Got to bed at 2:00 AM. Kinda lazy today (Tuesday).

Our last day (Monday) was a little bit of a waste. We absolutely had to be out of the room at noon with nothing much to do until we were picked up at 4:20, and that was four hours before departure. So we had a last leisurely lunch and sat on a bench outside in the shade people-watching. As usual, we viewed beautiful Spanish arches, porticos, swaying palm trees.

Cancun airport is half the size of Humphrey Terminal; and "bare bones" for amenities. Toilet there had an egg shell in it (actually it was on the dirty floor); bullhorns were in constant usage; it was noisy due to no carpets; and almost no food was for sale despite we had to take a van to the airport four hours ahead of time. (There was yogurt and hot dogs, and Tequila.) And of course only pretzels and pop onboard. Good thing we already had a nice breakfast and lunch.

All in all, we might recommend the experience to others IF they are willing to put with some inconvenience, and want to appreciate pampering and gorgeous vistas. But we probably will not go back any time soon. Kind of rich for our blood. All the same, we  do appreciate our good fortune.

Theresa has been totally tired and somewhat sick; now we find out that the doctor has tried to call about a thyroid problem. No doubt will be better soon, but might take a couple of months.

Thanks Dan & Kathy for delivering the car to the airport. Slick! Good to be home.

LOVE,
"R&T"
