Alaska Trip - Page 3
This section will tell a little about the tiny town called Talkeetna. Pronounced "tal (like Hal) keet- na. It is only a few hundred people. The men look like lumberjacks. Most have some type of beard, wear flannel shirts, and hardly dress up even for weddings (overheard a conversation at the cafe where a wife told her husband "you gotta dress up a little, you're the best man") and most drive cars or pick ups at least 15 years old. Everybody is friendly. Homes are very basic, with at least one junked car on the property, and "stuff" more or less neatly piled high on part of the front porch.
And they live differently. For instance one day at lunch in the very basic and very rustic Main Street Cafe, a business woman (in jeans of course) came in asking for volunteers to help her take down a tent which had been up all summer. Tourist season being officially done, she wanted to store it for winter and she thought it would take 2 hours if she had enough help... and she was willing to make it worth their while, although price was not discussed. Later at another business, they announced that they would be closed for two hours for the same reason.
Forgot to mention that besides 3 restaurants, a gas station, a general store, and several gifts shops, the airport, the school, and maybe 300 people, that is about it.
Throughout Alaska (at least what we saw) arts and crafts of every description seem to be very prevalent. And lots of it is quite lovely. i guess it is one way to survive the long winter.

Had to shoot Roger at the post office. The clerk in here was a guy our age and he "dressed up", in regular shirt, no tie, though.

Back to the cabin. Look carefully and at the top of this little hill you will see our cabin.

Our perfect hostess, Whitney, conversing with Roger. We had just given her the Great Northern Union Chorus Business card. She was interested in the hobby.

A breathtaking sunrise. See the fog burning off in the valley below. And the mountains in full sunlight (being higher) in the background.
