Portland to Home by Dawn

Dan's wife, Dawn, is an excellent photographer and took lots of pictures when they came out to Portland to meet me on my way home. Below are some selections from her several thousand pictures.

Remember that my train between San Jose & Portland stopped running because of a mudslide. Hence this is the plane I flew to Portland in. I'm at the window just behind the wing.

Light rail train in Portland that we took to our hotel.

Dawn took a picture of Dan taking a picture of me in front of Portland Union Station.

Me & Dan by the Oregon Museum of Science & Industry sign.

They lots of exhibits of dinosaurs including this one out front.

Interesting dinosaur skeletons.

Dan & I are waiting for the tour to the submarine - USS Blueback.

I'm playing with something, but I don't remember what it was.

Dan & I at an indoor ice rink in the Lloyd Center where I went skating when I used to work in Portland back in 1968.

Waiting in the rain.

Hustling to get on the train.

Portland's light rail train - very good service.

Dan & I are at the first class lounge in the depot.

Portland's trolley.

We visited one of the largest bookstores in the country.

I'm looking at old microcomputers from the 1980s. In front of me was an Apple IIe just like we owned many years ago.

Playing games waiting for our train.

Dawn  in their roommette.

Here our train had just crossed the Willamette river.

Then we crossed the Columbia River as our route took us east on the north side of the river.

Our first meal was served in our room since we didn't pick up our dining car till we got to Spokane the next day.

Typical appetizing meal (breakfast).

Watching the scenery go by in dining car. Note flowers on table. Also note GPS showing speed. Our top speed was typically 80 mph.

Every 4 to 6 hours the train stops are a larger city to take on supplies (and let smokers smoke outside).

St. Cloud, MN depot.

Coming to Minneapolis. Saw lots of truck trailers and lots of shipping containers on rail cars like those at the right.

Working freight engines

Brrrr... Back in Minneapolis temp was about 15 below zero when we arrived. Here Dan & I head for the cold, cold car.
